Choosing a safe extension cord for outside use
Extension cords have different uses. In the UK, an outdoor extension cord will be marketed specifically for outdoor use. You will notice that:
- Visual colour- Outdoor extension cords generally use bright orange or bright green rubber or plastic sheathing which increases the visibility of the wire outside, reducing the risk of slips, trips and falls. This covering is also incredibly durable and waterproof, to offer insulation to the internal wires, and to protect the cord from water damage, snow, frost, and increased UV exposure, all of which can break down the protective barrier.
- Waterproof socket covers- an outdoor extension cable will have waterproof and protected socket covers to protect the sockets and any plugs from weather damage. These caps are not present on internal extension cables.
- IP rating- Outdoor extension cords will have specific IP numbers attached to them, detailing their durability and resistance to damage. For outdoor use, your extension cord should have a high IP rating, the most common being an IP54 rating.
Using the right extension cord is essential for the safety of your property, as well as people in the property. An outdoor extension cord can protect from electrical fires and electric shocks, as long as this is used correctly.
