From student accommodation, to residential homes and gated communities, residential settings cover a wide range of options for a wide range of people. And most residential settings could use some additional wall lighting, not just for decorative purposes, but for meaningful task lighting. As a result, we have produced this guide to wall lighting options for residential settings.
Why is wall lighting important?
When you think of wall lighting, you probably think of wall sconces that don’t really provide much more than atmospheric light. But this isn’t the case. In fact, wall lighting covers a wide range of options and choices that can really make a difference to daily tasks.
Wall lighting options for residential settings
There are a number of wall lighting options that your residential setting could benefit from. Broadly speaking, these can be categorized into two areas. These are:
- Uplights- these provide accent lighting and essentially illuminate the wall and ceiling above them. Not useful for task lighting but effective for background lighting and atmosphere.
- Downlights- Perfect for practical purposes and task lighting, downlights cast the light down towards the ground. These can also be angled and movable to provide more choice to your residents.
Using wall lights
Wall lights in a residential setting should be available in each private room as an additional lighting option. For reading or other activities that can strain the eyes, your residents will need a light. If a wall light is not provided, they will need to use a lamp. And this can become a trip hazard or a health and safety issue.
In addition, corridors can benefit from wall lighting to add character and homeliness to your residential setting. After all, row upon row of fluorescent lighting illuminating the corridor just feels a little like a hospital or school, and less like a residence. Uplighters can be perfect for this.
