Considerations for using uplights in retail

Advantages of uplights in retail

Uplights are designed to cast light upwards towards the ceiling. While these may be positioned on the ground, for retail stores they are often positioned lower than the product to uplight the stock. But what are the considerations for using uplights in retail? And how can you be sure to achieve the right results?

What are the most important considerations for using uplights in retail?

To make sure you get the most out of the uplights you install in any retail setting, you should consider a number of things including:

  • Which products to highlight- uplights create a dramatic visual effect in any retail store. This can easily direct attention to any products or displays that you choose. For some companies, uplighting can be a great way to identify key high price, luxury items, while for others, uplighting can be a good way to show off impulse products.
  • Location in store- uplights can be used effectively almost anywhere in the store, although if you do use these near the entrance, they might not have the desired effect. This is because of the light contrast from the bright light outside, to the much dimmer lighting in the shop. This contrast makes it difficult initially for your potential customers to adjust to the lighting change, so uplights at this point will not be very effective.
  • Centre focus uplighting- if your shop or retail store has a centre focus that isnt a product line, uplights could be used to illuminate this instead. This can direct customers towards this point, and draw their attention to all of your products on the way.
