Different types of lighting

For this article, we will explore the three main lighting types, and the purpose of these. The lighting types include:

  • ambient lighting
  • task lighting
  • accent lighting

Ambient lighting

Ambient lighting simply provides the basic illumination in the room. So it is this lighting that can allow you to move around the room safely, and efficiently and provides basic uniform vision. In general, this will come from one light in the center of the ceiling, pointing directly down. So this may also be known as direct lighting. This lighting will bounce of walls and surfaces to provide as much light as possible.

Task lighting

Unlike ambient lighting, task lighting is designed to provide direct light towards a particular surface or areas where a task will take place. Consider a reading light, or a light for kitchen counter-tops, or offices. Avoid harsh lights when choosing task lights, because these can cause glare and distracting shadows.

Accent lighting

Finally, accent lighting can be used to draw attention to specific features in your property. This can include artwork, building plans, or even a bookcase. So whichever type of building or poverty you have, you can use accent lighting to draw attention to an area or an object.
