Understanding emergency lighting in commercial buildings

So what is emergency lighting? And is it necessary in commercial buildings?

Well emergency lighting is lighting that is not operated by the mains. Instead, it is activated when the mains power is not working. Such as, during an emergency. And this lighting is strategically placed around the property to help guide people within to safety. So is it necessary for your commercial property?

Is it necessary?

Well, since the introduction of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO) 2005, it has become the responsibility of the person in control of non-domestic buildings to ensure the safety of everyone inside. This includes employees and visitors, as well as customers. And as part of this responsibility, Article 14 (2) (h) of the RRFSO states:

“Emergency routes and exits requiring illumination MUST be provided with emergency lighting of adequate intensity in the case of failure of their normal lighting”.

This means that non-domestic buildings must be deemed safe at all times, even without mains power. So emergency lighting that provides illumination is essential. This should be used to highlight exits, escape routes and safety equipment, to minimize panic and prevent accidents or injuries. It could also save lives in the event of a fire, by helping everyone leave the premises in a safe and orderly fashion.
